Information for Vendors

We are proud to be a community-based Artisan & Farmers Market rooted in the values of sustainability, stewardship, and local livelihoods within our UNESCO-designated biosphere region. We prioritize artisans, farmers, and food vendors who produce locally using sustainable and organic practices. In keeping with our commitment to ecological integrity and community well-being, wholesale, manufactured, and imported goods are not permitted.

MABR is striving to:

  • Support and stimulate the local economy by providing a venue for artisans, craftspeople, organic market gardeners, backyard growers, and home-produced foods.

  • Strengthen the foundation of a vibrant community by offering a safe, welcoming, and relaxing gathering place for individuals and families.

  • Create opportunity for community groups to share information and raise awareness of important local, social, and environmental issues..

  • Encourage the continued transition toward ecologically harmonious food production by working with, rather than against, natural systems.

Market Values & Community Conduct

The MABR Qualicum Beach Thursday Night Market is grounded in a spirit of cooperation, respect, and shared purpose. Vendors believe in building community while offering high-quality, locally produced goods. By fostering an environment of creativity, openness, and mutual support, we celebrate the local talent showcased at the market.

Rather than competing, vendors encourage one another to thrive in a nurturing atmosphere of abundance. We support one another by helping with set-up and take-down and by purchasing from fellow vendors. All participants are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and collaborative manner.

The day-to-day conduct, operation, and coordination of the Thursday Night Market are governed by the following rules and regulations. Exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of market management when deemed to be in the best interests of the market.

General Sale of Products

All products offered for sale must be produced locally, supporting a direct relationship between producer and consumer and strengthening the local economy. Under special circumstances, consideration may be given to non-local products. Vendors are encouraged to support one another by purchasing from fellow market participants.

Ideally, all products should be sold directly by the Producer. With Board approval, a Producer may staff their stall with a non-producer, provided that the individual is knowledgeable about all aspects of production, in order to maintain the integrity and branding of the market.

All food sold at the market must comply with Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) regulations. Commercial resale products or products that exploit humanity are not permitted. The Board retains absolute discretion in determining the suitability of any product for sale.

Craft Policies

The following additional policies apply to vendors selling crafts:

  • The handcrafted component must clearly dominate any commercial elements, and commercial components must be transformed to create unique work.

  • All items must be original in design and execution.

  • Vendors may not sell items that use, reproduce, or include copyrighted or trademarked elements owned by others.

  • Starting materials must be significantly altered and enhanced by the artisan.

  • Products must meet basic standards of function, durability, and safety.

  • Each craft product must be reviewed and approved in advance by a member of the Craft Committee prior to display or sale.

Food & Beverage Policies

The following additional policies apply to vendors selling prepared or processed food:

  • All vendors must comply with VIHA regulations and obtain approval from VIHA each season prior to selling at the market. Vendors must immediately cease selling and remove any product upon request by a VIHA representative.

  • Vendors are encouraged to use organic, unrefined, and locally grown ingredients whenever possible. Non-local ingredients should be minimized, with major ingredients and flavourings sourced locally. Vendors are encouraged to purchase ingredients from market farmers.

  • All food products must be clearly labelled with a complete list of ingredients in order of predominance. Efforts should be made to distinguish between organic and non-organic ingredients. Labels may be affixed to individual items or clearly displayed at the stall.

  • All open-prepared food must remain covered at all times and be served using clean, appropriate tools (e.g., tongs). Vendors handling cash must wash their hands before touching open-prepared food.

  • Each food product must be reviewed and approved in advance by market coordinators.
